The Etiquette of Applying Job Online

How to apply job online? It is not because you are about to apply the job online, your cover letter will be less formal then making a printed copy. For me, it is all the same. The only different is the delivery method which is paperless. But then, the important part is the message wil be the same.

Applying job online is becoming normal for job-seekers. There are some many job hunting websites require you to fill out your information and cover letter to the web-application, then you resume will be generated into their format. By using this online system, employers can easily search for your resume, and so you need to keep in mind if you plan to find a job confidentially.

In the meantime, if you have any social networking websites such as Facebook, Instagram or Myspace, be aware that your recruiters or employers might also search your profile. In case your profile contents  can be considered as inappropriate, it is the best for you to delete the content of set it as a private.

Be Careful of the Email Etiquette
This is very important. You need to make sure your email address is in a professional manners without anything offensive to public. You shouldn't leave the subject line as blank too. In order to stand out from other candidates, you may write an eye-catching subject such as "10 years Experience Electrician for Supervisory Position" is much better than "Job Application for Supervisor Position". You also cannot type your subject in uppercase letter because it showing that you were shouting to the reader.

You need to send your email in plin and unformatted text. Large fonts, additional graphics, bullet points and colours are not necessary. Just use, black font with normal font size (normally 10) in Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman.

Check your Attachment
For security reasons, there are companies which do not accept any emails attachment. So, you do not need to attach your resume except when they ask for it. As if the employer did asks you to attached your resume via an attachment, make it in Microsoft Word or PDF and don't forget to give each files a professional or appropriate names. Example, "Resume_MrDanial" or "Danial021113" will be more appropriate because it will make sure the recruiter will view a correct attachment for your application.

Double & Triple Check your Contents
My practice, I will not fill the address of the email recipient until I finished writing and proofread my email contents. This will prevent myself from accidentally clicking at "Send" icon my mistake. Cross check on any spelling and grammatical errors to make sure there are nothing missed in the email. You may try to send the finish documents to yourself to see how the email come out on the other side and to ensure the format is correct.

Immediate Follow Up
After sending the email, you may proceed with immediate follow up by sending a hard copy of your resume and cover letter to the respective hiring manager by using regular mail and referencing to your previous email.
